forgive my ignorance, but I have never had to setup an outside ebuild, so what do i need to do besides untaring the ebuilds.... where do i put the tarball for the drivers

The driver packages themselves go into /usr/portage/distfiles as usual. The ati-drivers.tar.bz2 file should be extracted into /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers (you may need to create that directory first, that's OK). When the ebuilds are extracted, run

at school at the moment, I had a brief look at it this mourning and I noticed I can switch between gui (which turns off my screen) and console with the ctrl+alt+fx thingy, I'm pretty sure I set the monitor settings correctly, I know the refresh rates by heart by now aha

Try fiddling with the NoDDC, IgnoreEDID, and DPMS (in the Monitor section) options. Also, try setting the refresh rates for your monitor lower than they actually are, and see if that helps.

Tried changing around all those options and using low refresh rates but still now luck

Should I have "Synch buffer swaps with vertical synch signal" off? (its currently off)

Can you post your most recent XF86Config and logfile?

The sync buffer swaps thing shouldn't make any difference AFAIK. Another thing you could try is setting a value for the "VRefresh2" driver option. Start off at 60. I think you might need IgnoreEDID set to "on" for it to have an effect.

already tried only listing 640*480 resolution... now i'm getting an actual error for some reason

Off the topic: I'm just runnig fluxbox at the moment to see what its like and I want to start up gftp how do I run a program, without using xterm?

Well, tuxracer still seems to crash after a while. The music just keeps going in the background.
The Xfree log doesn't say anything, I'll probably have to turn off buffering in metalog to see anything from the kernel module that happened at the last moment...

Edit: seems buffering was off all the time.. There was only one error, something about allocation failed.
Any ideas?

when I do lsmod it says agpgart is loaded...

I'm not sure if it was the unplugging of second monitor of modprobing via_agp though

running 1280 * 1024 @ 85Hz - beautiful, no more headaches for me

I'm retty sure it was having that second monitor plugged in, I've tried unpluging it before but that was when I was using a kernel that didn't support my chpset so it didn't work anyways...

yeh I don't even use the duel monitor I was just playing around with it, and it wasn't that handy in linux, but now I'm using fluxbox it seems like it actually could be handy, but I don't know if its worth the effort of setting it up.

oh, one more thing, is there an app for fluxbox that displays your folders and stuff like in gnome and kde (when you click on home or whatever), hard to explain what I mean

To navigate my system files with a GUI

- still so many other things I have to work out, I gotta get sound happening, configure this desktop to my liking and lots of other crap aha, but at least I can look at my monitor for longer than 2 minutes now
