Your original post says you're using the kernels AGP support, so have you got both modules loaded? agpgart and probably sis-agp from the look of your lspci output.

I've occasionally had the same kind of problem with some files, particularly XF86Config, where they are overwritten with binary junk and random bits of code, but I've never quite worked out why it happens.

Indeed, I use ReiserFS. I take care to sync via SysRq before performing the emergency reboot. Can you explain why I get junk in my files nevertheless? :(

I'm using Reiser on my root partition atm, but I'm sure I remember having these problems a few months back when I was using ext3. Some more information would be nice :)
Edit: When it happens to me, it isn't usually after a complete lockup. Occasionally X just fails to start for some strange reason of it's own, and when I check the log or config they're full of crap.

schoett: is the kernel detecting your AGP chipset properly (check dmesg output)? What happens if you remove the fglrx module from the /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/video dir and try starting X? It should still startup like that, although with any acceleration. Have you tried remerging X with more conservative CFLAGS?

Code:
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected SiS 648 chipset
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xd0000000

When I put
Code:
    Option "no_dri"                     "yes"
into my /etc/X11/XF86Config, X works fine, but without DRI acceleration. The fglrx module is not loaded in this case. This is my normal mode of operation at the moment. :(

Does changing your AGP aperture size make any difference? I wouldn't think so if it's already at 128 though. Are there any unusual settings in your XF86Config? What's your kernel config like? Do you have ACPI and/or APIC support? Is MTRR support compiled in? Does dmesg display any warnings when you load the fglrx module? Do the 2.9.13 drivers work? Does any driver/kernel combination work? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't have any real idea why it's behaving like this :( You might want to try posting over at Rage3D, someone there may have an idea. A couple of the guys who work on the Linux drivers for ATI also post on that forum.

Whenever I start x it crashes to a black screen (where I can sometimes Ctrl-Alt-Del).

I am running:
linux-2.4.20-gaming-r5
Xfree 4.3.0-r3
ati-drivers 3.2.5

i have tried with and without a console framebuffer and kernel options pci=noacpi and pci=biosirq

my system is:

AthlonXP 2600+
Epox 8RDA3+ (nforce2 with bios 8/27/2003)
Sapphire Radeon 9100 128M
512M DDR (single stick)
60G Western Digital 8M 7200RPM
Hercules Game Theatre XP

I have read that some people running the Epox 8RDA are having similar issues.

My /var/log/XFree86.0.log reports no errors, and my system is still up when i get the problem, I am able to ssh into the system, but unable to kill X.

I have also tried my GeForce2mx and had exactly the same problem

I just tried to start x again ( i havent changed anything), this time i was able to see the cursor and move it around, but i could see a broken up picture of: "WindowsXP is now shutting down", this was after i had gone into windows, and rebooted the system back into linux. there was a large artifact at the top of the screen that stretched right across the screen and cam down about 1/6th of the height.

Okay, I've got the 3.2.5 drivers working (2D, no 3D yet). Now the thing is agpgart is compiled in the ac-sources 2.4.22 kernel. Dmesg tells me:

Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: unsupported bridge
agpgart: no supported devices found.

Further down I found this:

agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: Detected an Intel 875G Chipset with integrated grapics.

I thought the new drivers only supported TV out on 9700/9800 cards? Or am I totally wrong? :)

Justice: have you tried changing the UseInternalAGPGART setting? Does that kernel have nForce2 AGP support?

Gelfing: if you compile AGP support into the kernel, it usually causes problems with the AGP support in the driver. Try building the kernel AGP as modules.

The kernel does have Nforce2 agp support, and I have tried changing the USEInternalAGP setting.

I tried compiling agpgart as a module, but now the module fails to load when I re-booted my PC. Looking at this error message tells that the agpgart doesn't support my i875P mb.

Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: unsupported bridge
agpgart: no supported devices found.

If I'm wrong please let me know. I've been playing with the 2.6.0 test kerenls but I haven't had any luck getting it to boot. I just get a black screen after the lilo bootscreen.

Justice: can you always do CTRL-ALT-F1 to get back to a console when you hit the black screen?

Gelfing: In your original post, the first set of agpgart messages are from the kernel, the second from the fglrx module. It looks like the fglrx module does have support for your chipset, so don't load the kernel agpgart module, just make sure you have "UseInternalAGPGART" set to "yes" in your XF86Config, and the fglrx module loaded.

Sorry for sounding dump but I don't have any idea how to applay this patch for the test5 kernel.

It would be really kind if someone can explain it a little bit more detailed.

Thanks

Open the ebuild for the driver version you want to emerge in an editor, then find the src_unpack() section. At the end of it you'll see some patch commands. After the last one, add a patch command for the test5 patch. It should look something like this when it's added:
Code:
     einfo "applying fglrx-2.6-vmalloc-vmaddr"
     patch -p1 < ${FILESDIR}/fglrx-2.6-vmalloc-vmaddr.patch
     einfo "applying 2.6.0-test5 fix"
     patch -p1 < /path/to/fglrx-2.6-test5.patch
     fi
}

Mind asking where I can find this patch?
I haven't found anything in this thread.
It should be on the last two pages I guess?

I only found this:

Code:

423c423
<       int                    minor = minor(inode->i_rdev);
---
>       int                    minor = MINOR(inode->i_rdev);
849c849
<     return minor(inode->i_rdev);
---
>     return MINOR(inode->i_rdev);

Hope you will help me out again :)
Thanks

Hello!

Please help me!

I am desperate. Whatever Kernel whether with or without agpgart/drm I am running, whatever version of the ati-drivers 2.9.12 - 3.2.5 I am using, I will always get an
(EE) No devices detected.
by XF86 4.3

I tried to change the BUS ID or even commented it out in the config file. I also tried internal and external agpgart. FGLRX seems to compile ok. modprobe flgrx works ok, too.

Please help me!! I don't know what to do anymore!!

Post your logfile (/var/log/XFree86.0.log). The "No screens detected" may not be the only error message.

OK. I am getting closer ...
It seems, that the driver is not being loaded properly, maybe its not even being recognized by xfree. i can change the driver option in the xfree config file from "fglrx" to "blah" and i get the very same error message...if i change it to "ati" everything works ok!
what could have gone wrong with emerging the drivers, so that xfree doesn't recognize it?

EDIT:

cat /pro/dri/0/name puts out: fglrx 0xe200

A second question: could it be possible, that ati-drivers dont support 9500 pro??

Emerge the drivers again and check for any error messages. Have you run fglrxconfig?

They should support that card. If you look at the Xfree logfile, you should see something like this:
Code:
(II) FireGL8700/8800: Driver for chipset: ATI RV250 Id (R9000),

ATI R350 NH (R9800), ATI R350 NK (Fire GL unknown)
and the 9500 Pro is listed there.

Justice: what are the last few lines in the log? Does it get past the section that looks like this?:
Code:
