Hello,
I had experienced very slow disk operations under Gentoo. Recently I found that I had not compiled a chip driver into my kernel so the laptop could start using DMA. This gave a great improvement (~5 times faster, I recommend checking this out for everyone else who encounters a slow system performance), still Windows is copying files almost 2 times faster. What else could it be?
[linux filesystem ext3, hdd ST98823A, kernel version 2.6.17]

To begin, study man hdparm and run tests (hdparm -t/-T) before and after changing various operating parameters. In particular, be sure to try the various DMA modes to find the optimal one for your hardware. _________________ Plants are pithy, brooks tend to babble--I'm content to lie between them.
