After a lot of hard work, finally got a new ebuild for mplayer in the tree.

This release fixes a lot of bugs from upstream, and the ebuild added something like 15 new use flags or so. If you're not sure which to use, just go with the defaults and you'll be fine.

Please lemme know about any issues you get with it, and I'll see what I can fix.

edit: there have already been two revision bumps, so if you're having issues with GMPlayer wait for that one, pleez.

edit: three revision bumps, so use -r3 for maximum goodness :D

edit: If youre having problems, post output of emerge -pv mplayer

edit: ebuild renamed to media-video/mplayer-1.0.20070321

mod edit: made unstick - pilla

You'll need to add a dependency on libdvdnav if you want that USE flag to be of any help ;)

Code:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies \
!!! Multiple versions within a single package slot have been
!!! pulled into the dependency graph:

('ebuild', '/', 'sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.19.2-r2', 'merge') pulled in by
  ('ebuild', '/', 'media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_pre20070321-r1', 'merge')

('ebuild', '/', 'sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.20-r2', 'nomerge') pulled in by
  ('ebuild', '/', 'sys-apps/hal-0.5.7.1-r5', 'nomerge')
  ('ebuild', '/', 'media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.18-r2', 'nomerge')

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in the
dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can not be
installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page
or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Why does the new mplayer package depend on a specific version of the installed kernel headers?

My guess would be ivtv being broken with 2.6.20 headers. Like a lot of things.

MPlayer uses its own internal version actually

Edit: I read that wrong. It does have an internal version of dvdread, not nav.

take out radio. I probably should do some kernel checks to see that yes indeed v4l2 support is enabled.

I seem to have a similar problem, and it seems to be eastern European, like Russian or something. I have LINGUAS set to "uk", and my LANG is set to en_GB.UTF-8.

Ukranian to be specific. That's what uk is for. You want en_GB (which isn't available for mplayer, so it just defaults to en, which is fine).

There was a bug in the way languages were handled, and iconv support being disabled forcibly on some conditions.

That's been fixed in -r3 release in CVS.

However, how it handles the LINGUAS is different now as well.

MPlayer will use the first variable in the LINGUAS flag as the one to display the messages as. It will also add man pages for that language and any others you have set, along with English whether or not its in LINGUAS or not.

Actually it occurs to me now that even using the LINGUAS use flags on the ebuild doesnt make sense at all, since the ebuild loops through them alphabetically and sees if the flag is set, while the configure script can read the LINGUAS variable in the first place. The problem with that approach is that if you have "fr and ja" linguas set, then it will set --language=fr,ja,en even if in LINGUAS the order is "ja fr en".

I think I'll probably remove the LINGUAS use flags completely. I'm going to have to research some more to make sure it would work okay.

In my case, I have NO OSD output at all: no subtitles, no video position, to volume change osd...

I've added the "srt" use flags, and removed LINGUAS (because I prefer mplayer's output in english). I've even specified a -font /path/to/a/ttf/font (arial.ttf from ms corefonts, just to test)...
but nothing.

I've also ~x86 freetype, then upgraded both slots.

This is emerge -pv output:

Code:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_pre20070321-r2  USE="3dnow 3dnowext X a52 aac alsa amr arts dga dvd dvdnav encode ggi gif gtk jpeg libcaca mad mmx mmxext mp3 opengl oss png real sdl srt sse theora truetype unicode v4l v4l2 vorbis win32codecs x264 xinerama xv xvid -aalib (-altivec) -bidi -bindist -bl -cddb -cdparanoia -cpudetection -custom-cflags -debug -directfb -doc -dts -dv -dvb -dvdread -enca -esd -fbcon -ftp -iconv -ipv6 -ivtv -jack -joystick -lirc -live -livecd -lzo -md5sum -mp2 -musepack -nas -openal -pnm -quicktime -radio -rar -rtc -samba -speex -sse2 -svga -tivo -xanim -xvmc -zoran" LINGUAS="-bg -cs -da -de -el -es -fr -hu -it -ja -ko -mk -nb -no -pl -pt_BR -ro -ru -sk -sv -tr -uk -zh_CN -zh_TW" VIDEO_CARDS="-mga -s3virge -tdfx -tga -vesa" 0 kB

Any ideas?

Yah, that was my bad too. Fixed in -r3 as well.

It's already mirrored, so sync up and upgrade and you should be fine.

Oh, and viva la argentina. :)

I added USE a52 and re-emerged mplayer. It pulled in a52dec and now it works, but I didn't need that lib before.

a52dec is now needed for that?

Ukranian to be specific. That's what uk is for. You want en_GB (which isn't available for mplayer, so it just defaults to en, which is fine).

Haha. I feel pretty dumb after that :) Although there's no "en" flag in this version so I guess that was worth reporting.

Because en is the default if you don't specify a different language.
