I know there's other posts inquiring about lightscribe for linux, but I'm particularly interested if anyone has this problem.
I have installed Lacie LightScribe with the following:
Code: |
tar tvfz 4L-1.0-r6.i586.tar.gz

I run the following and get (this is to detect the DVD burner hardware):
Code: |
jason@dory ~ $ 4L-cli enumerate
Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
Segmentation fault
jason@dory ~ $
|
Anyone else have this problem? |

Have you ever used strace? It is not normally installed so you may have to emerge it. Try the following:
Code: | strace 4L-cli enumerate 2>&1 | less |
You should be able to see libraries being loaded, etc. For instance, one line 9 I see the following:
Code: | open("/usr/lib/liblightscribe.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 |
Post some interesting lines from your output. |

Maybe the tail end is enough to see what's wrong? There's lot's of info.
Might have something to do with "Inappropriate ioctl for device)".
Not sure if this is related or not, but with this dvd burner when i try to play a DVD, dma becomes disabled and errors in /var/log/messages. But I posted about this elsewhere.

I have the same "Inappropriate ioctl for device":
Code: |
read(3, "ResourceDir=/usr/lib/lightscribe"..., 8192) = 84
read(3, "", 4096) = 0
read(3, "", 8192) = 0
ioctl(3, SNDCTL_TMR_TIMEBASE or TCGETS, 0xbf9ef568) = -1 ENOTTY (Inappropriate ioctl for device)
close(3) = 0
munmap(0xb7fdd000, 4096) = 0
|
Here's the output from my strace where you get the segmentation fault:
Code: |
open("/proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info", O_RDONLY) = 3
fstat64(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0444, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
mmap2(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb7
fab000
read(3, "CD-ROM information, Id: cdrom.c "..., 8192) = 433
read(3, "", 7168) = 0
read(3, "", 8192) = 0
close(3) = 0
munmap(0xb7fab000, 4096) = 0
open("/dev/hda", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK) = 3
ioctl(3, SG_GET_VERSION_NUM, 0xbfebdd18) = 0
ioctl(3, SG_IO, 0x806026c) = 0
ioctl(3, SG_IO, 0x806026c) = 0
ioctl(3, SG_IO, 0x806026c) = 0
close(3) = 0
open("/proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info", O_RDONLY) = 3
|
Right after the munmap, you get the error. The next thing it trys to do is open /dev/hda. So, the question is, where does it really crash: before the open or after.
The one thing I noticed in your hdparm info is that there is no "*" for the current active mode. Here's my hdparm info:
Code: |
hdparm -i /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Model=HL-DT-STDVDRRW GCA-4166B, FwRev=1.08, SerialNo=
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 *udma3
AdvancedPM=no
Drive conforms to: device does not report version:
* signifies the current active mode
|
Notice the "*" next to the udma3?
Here's my normal hdparm output:
Code: |
hdparm /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
|
It may be that your problem is related to the DMA issue. |

I've got
Code: |
hdparm -i /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Model=HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H22L, FwRev=1.00, SerialNo=
Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
AdvancedPM=no
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-2 ATA/ATAPI-3 ATA/ATAPI-4 ATA/ATAPI-5
* signifies the current active mode
|
with udma2 mode, as you can see
hdparm says
Code: |
/dev/hda:
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
|
But still no luck with 4L-cli enumerate :
Code: |
4L-cli enumerate
Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
Segmentation fault
|
I've tried different DMA modes, but no luck here
.::EDIT::.
I forgot to mention that the output from strace is the same as in other cases in this thread. _________________ The clock is ticking, brothers and sisters, counting down to Armageddon. |

Has anyone come across any more information on this issue (segmentation fault) with the lightscribe drivers under Gentoo? This URL:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=497901

seems to hint that it's a kernel issue. However, folks on this forum seem to have gotten it working even using the same drive I have. For example, 'efwahl' has the same Samsung SH-S182M drive I have and it seems to work for him:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-350661-start-50.html

I've tried using the driver and the GUI directly from the lightscribe.com website (version 1.4.124 and the SimpleLabeler app) and also from the lacie.com website (version 1.4.113 and the '4L' gui and client.) I even tried running the lightscribe.com 1.4.124 library with the lacie 4L gui. No difference.
With the SimpleLabeler app I get:
Quote: |
Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
Segmentation fault
|
With the 4L-cli app I get:
Quote: |
$ 4L-cli enumerate
Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
Segmentation fault
|
With the 4L-gui application the program runs, but I can't do a lightscribe burn because no drives are found.
An strace of the segfaulting apps shows the same problem just about everyone else with segfaults is having:

Note that this drive reads and burns CD-ROMs and DVDs just fine in every other respect. It just won't do the lightscribe thing. I have a Win98 VMware machine also, but of course Nero doesn't support lightscribe on Win98 (figures). Nor does NeroLinux support lightscribe. I can google lots of press releases saying K3B will/does support lightscribe, but I can't find any post indicating which version (if any ever will) of K3B actually does support lightscribe.
BTW, I installed these apps by doing the 'rpm2targz' thing on the RPM packages and writing a simple overlay ebuild to install the files. Everything appears to install properly. I tried re-emerge libstdc++-v3 like another forum post suggested. No difference.
Soooo, can anyone out there who has a Samsung SH-S182M running on a Gentoo x86 system confirm that they have lightscribe running? If so, would you be so kind as to tell me how you got it working? Thanks. |
