Hello all,
I'm thinking about setting up a router for my home network and have found a bunch of great how-tos on the gentoo wiki, man that thing is great! I did however have one question that remains unanswered... could I set up the machine that is going to be router, with Apache, Samba, and VPN? (good idea, bad idea?). I was curious about security risks in doing this as the services will be running on the same machine as the firewall. Any input is welcome, thanks in advance! |

hi,
why not ???
You can setup your webserver,ftp,vpn,etc... on the firewall machine, too.
But you have to look at your configurations and iptables setting if you only want this services for your LAN.
The howto's should tell you that.

Yes it's possible... But if you're at all worried about security I wouldn't add some of those services onto the same box... Especially Samba...
Typically you want your Firewall/Router to be an isolated OS... I say OS and not hardware because you can adequately secure your network by using virtual machines (XEN, etc).
Of course if you properly configure the services/daemons you should be alright... |
