Probably a silly question, but Im trying to get a dialup connection going. Ive just moved house and can no longer get ADSL.
I have a conexant HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem installed in one of my PCI slots but am having no end of trouble getting it to work. Ive installed the hsfmodem drivers but everytime I try hsfconfig I get an error about 'Module build failed'. Ive found several threads on the subject, but none giving any solution.
Anyways.... Im thinking I'm just going to go buy a new modem and Im wondering whats the best / easiest to configure for Linux/Gentoo?
I realise there can probably be allot of variables here, but really, without an internet connection (im at work now) its very difficult to get help fixing the problems with my current modem. Im hoping I can just get a usb modem that will pretty much work out of the box.

HFS modems are a pain in the ass, I talk from experience. I got it working time ago, and used one for years. But you know... you have to pay if you want to get the full speed of your modem. The demo driver goes up to 14kbps only.
My advice: buy a real modem, not a software modem, and you will be fine. Most internal modems are software based modems (aka winmodems). So, any external modem -even a conexant one- will work fine it is is plugged into a serial port. Can't comment on USB ones, never used one, but they can't be easier to handle than a serial one, and they won't be any faster either.
With a serial modem you just need a working serial port. As long as your kernel is able to talk you your serial port, you can use any modem, no driver is needed. Just plug it into, run wvdialconf or the dialer of your choice, point it to the right serial device, and forget about idiotic chips. |
