I'm gonna be building 2 HTPCs for mythtv/general HTPC usage, and I need a good PCI soundcard suggestion for one of them, as it'll be connected to a large digital A/V sound system.

Where good = AC3 output works w. ALSA and its also (possibly) cheap ^.^

Up to now I've only build Windows MCE HTPCs and I use X-Mystique 7.1s because re-encoding 5.1 AAC to AC3 in hardware is nice :)

You'll probably have to wait longer than an hour or two for a response; you have a fairly specific question. If you don't get anything by tomorrow, you might try posting in the multimedia section (with a link here).

I've always used motherboards with built-in optical out like the a Shuttle, the Soyo Dragon Ultra, or anything with the nvidia nForce chipset. Although to be honest, I can't really recommend anything in particular since I haven't setup an optical out yet. I have to finish some house construction stuff to get my receiver and speakers setup the way I wanted, so I've delayed the full surround-sound for now.

The Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE is very inexpensive and you can add on the Digital I/O Module for the Optical and Coaxial connections for only $14.99 more. I am running this combo successfully on my Gentoo/MythTV box, connected to my home theater system.

I have been looking for one too for my HTPC. I'm sold on the HT Omega card, but haven't been able to find someone that has used one in a Linux based system.
