Lol i know,
this spec of computer is very old and outdated, but im trying to setup gentoo on a old machine for my girlfriend.
Its a Cyrix 300mhz with 32mb ram and a Matrox Mystiqe (spelling i know is wrong).
Ive managed to get the min install cd to drop me at the command line but i cant get futher than that.
Ive ran the i686 livecd on it and it gets to copying tempfs and then it says killed.
I know the i686 wont work because of the core speed of the processor, but im not having windows 98 on any machine in my house.
Is there anyway at all i can install gentoo on this machine?
My girlfriend only likes to play silly java games on various webpages, and to listen to music etc... so its not going to be doing anything demanding.
Please can i have some help doing this, as it improves my skills on gentoo and stops me getting an earful
Thanks all,
Dan. _________________ amd 2100+ 1.7

Hmm... I'm just thinking what web browser is able to run at 32MB if it's the amount X needs itself... I got 128MB and it's definitely the lowest amount with which I can do anything without smashing the computer. _________________ Mleko rulez |

lol, my g/f aint too bothered about speed. she is very patient (lucky for me!)
ive got firefox on win98 and that takes about 100 years but it works after its loaded.
I mean by the command line, it loads the min install then drops me at a terminal, no X or anything.
Boot from the min install cd and you will see what i mean.
How do i just copy the kernel and stuff over so i can boot from the HDD instead of cd?
like i said, if i can get X on it i'll be happy because she doesnt want to do too much on it.
Thanks again,

?? As far as I know i686 is the instruction set and it has nothing to do with processor speed. If something got MMX set then it's i686 and I'm almost sure that Cyrix at 300MHz got MMX. _________________ Mleko rulez |

I installed gentoo with the 50mb install CD (CLI based) on a 300mhz fine, just dont think about using the GTK CD.
Compile a kernel with the bare minimum, then just emerge fluxbox and firefox (what i did), and once firefox has loaded it runs fine.
..even if emerge --sync takes 20minutes... who cares? |
