Hey all, after installing Gentoo from the LiveCD, I rebooted my comp, chose Gentoo from grub and now I'm in a non-GUI environment of Linux (meaning I can only see the command shell and type commandws in)? I would just like to know how I can go to a GUI-environment like what was featured on the LiveCD - thanks.

First, wellcome:

Well, it seems that you didn't read the Xorg docs, you really need this!: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

After installing and configuring Xorg (if you have any problem, only ask) you will need a Window manager (you have one when you install Xorg, but its the most ugly thing I've seen), perhaps Xfce4, Kde or Gnome are good choices.

There are a lot of docs about those Desktop managers:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/fluxbox-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/fluxbox-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml

And dont forget about the loging managers (and you usually need to edit the /etc/rc.conf file) xdm/kdm/gdm.... you will need them to log into X session (graphical), or you can type: startx to bring up your X session.

Bye and good luck ;)

Thanks a lot for the help! I just got into Linux a few days ago and I feel a little bit disoriented :? so I'm sorry in advance if I ask questions that are answered in the docs! I'll keep these kinds of questions to a minimum, but I was very eager to get Linux up and running and THEN figuring out how it works seeing how its annoying to boot from the LiveCD everytime I wanna run Linux :P

Thanks again

Don't worry, all we are newcomer to something, and that docs are not too hard, you can set up the graphical enviroment in a few hours or less (depend in if you use the binary or not and in your CPU), it took 6 hours in my computer :P But I dont use KDE, and the graphical enviroment of the liveCD is Gnome, in case you liked that one ;)

Bye and nice reading ;)

Yea, the documentation is your friend on this one. I started writting out instructions but really, if you follow the links provided above you should be able to get something working, or at least to a confused state where we can help with specific install problems.

It sounds like this is your fist time playing around with linux? Obviously we're all gentoo linux fans here, but I don't think many of us would consider gentoo particularly friendly to new users. It's a very powerful & customizable version of linux but it's very basic out of the box. You really have to build everything from the ground up. If you're comfortable with that, then between the documentation and this forum you should be able to get a system up and running with a little effort. If you'd rather take an easier route, you may want to download an Ubuntu linux installation CD. Ubuntu is generally a lot easier to install and get a good working system, it may be easier to get familiar with linux that way.

Not trying to steer you one way or another, just providing some info
