Salve a tutti, ho appena installato Gentoo. Il mio pc è un AMD64 3000+ montato su una Asus A8N-SLI, scheda video Ati Radeon X700 PCI-E. Allora, Gentoo parte con Gnome e non mi dà problemi, ma credo di avere qualche problema con il server X, nel senso che parte, ma mi sembra che stia al minimo delle sue potenzialità, e che oltretutto non mi riconosca la scheda video. Se hai gi* seguito questa e poi questa guida direi che si pu* passare all'analisi dei log ed eventualmente risolvere i problemi.
un buon punto di partenza se non hai gi* seguito le due guide segnalate * postare il risultato di:

Il tuo xorg.conf mi pare abbastanza pieno di "schifezze" (passami il termine  ), l'hai fatto creare automaticamente da qualche procedura (semi)automatica, tipo X -configure?
Ti consiglio di farti una copia di sicurezza, e ricreartelo da zero, magari tramite lo strumento xorgconfig (basta rispondere a delle domande).
Poi aggiungi gli ulteriori FontPath per i font installati nel tuo sistema e sistema la sezione Device.
N.B. I driver Linux per le schede ATI fanno impazzire (in senso negativo  ) un bel pò di gente, preparati spiritualmente/psicologicalmente

non è vero che fanno impazzire... fanno solo girare le... (sapete cosa), dato che non supportano decentemente opengl, aiglx, ... composite+dri, xv overlay su amd64, ...
speriamo che l'amministrazione amd migliori la situazione. Io ora non consiglio più ati (l'ho provato sulla mia pelle).

Si salvano i proprietari delle ATI un pò più vecchiotte (es. Radeon 9200), con le quali i driver open source 2D/3D funzionano (abbastanza) egregiamente (provato sulla mia pelle.. fiuuuu   )
@chip82: se non ti interessa da subito il supporto all'accelerazione 3D, ti consiglio di provare questi driver (VIDEO_CARDS="radeon") e vedere di configurare opportunamente X.Org. Quando sei apposto, prova a passare nuovamente al driver proprietario (fglrx).
