Installing / Using Japanese writing systems on Gentoo

Perhaps the only thing I miss about the distro I was using in the past is the ability to easily switch between English and Japanese language environments.

Since I've long ago dumped my old boxen, I don't have a Japanese language box to see what needs to be installed/configured in order to switch to the Japanese fonts/writing systems ... anyone have an idea or a direction they can point me in?
