Próbowałem zainstalować GNOME 2.16.2:
portage # emerge -pv =gnome-2.16.2
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=gnome-2.16.2" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- gnome-base/gnome-2.16.2 (masked by: package.mask)
W /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
jest tylko
# The Great GNOME 2.18.0 mask
w /etc/portage GNOME 2.16.2 też nie jest zamaskowane
Gdzie może być problem ? |

Jakie masz ACCEPT_KEYWORDS?
Zresztą zamiast:

zastosuj po prostu:
2.16.2 jest domyślny dla chyba wszystkich architektur (nawet niestabilnych niestety): http://gentoo-portage.com/gnome-base/gnome

Robił, robił, problem się częściowo wyjaśnił,
"#Gnome-2.16 is not supported in 2.4 kernels as per bug #147707"
Piszę częściowo, bo na
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147707
wynika że bug dotyczy FreeBSD
poza tym
na

jest status

więc dalej nie wiem o co tu do końca chodzi.
