can anyone please tell me how to configure gaim to use google talk?
I managed to do it in kopete but in gaim it just wouldn't go...

Well it _just works_ for me. I know that it isn't probably helpful, but if I were you I'd try to reemerge gaim.
I remember that I had to remove several flags, like dbus and mono to make it work. Also beta6 didn't work for me, I had to stick with beta5-r3

currently using version 2.0.0_beta5-r3 and got it working (-dbus -mono)
