I followed the PPC and ALSA FAQ verbatim to set up ALSA. I built the drivers into the kernel. It doesn't work and I am completely out of ideas.

When i try to start alsa, i get
Code:

gsfgf@laptop ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound start
 * Loading ALSA modules ...
 *   Loading: snd-card-0 ...
FATAL: Module snd_aoa not found.                                          [ !! ]
 * ERROR: Failed to load necessary drivers                                [ ok ]
 * Restoring Mixer Levels ...
 * No mixer config in /etc/asound.state, you have to unmute your card!    [ ok ]
gsfgf@laptop ~ $

then i try to start alsamixer i get
Code:

gsfgf@laptop ~ $ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
gsfgf@laptop ~ $

here's my kernel config
Code:

d2_racing:
Unfortunately, lspci doesn't tell you anything useful on PPC for sound, all possible cards are only available through the I2C bus which isn't visible as a device through lspci.

gsfgf:

Since you built the sound drivers into your kernel, there is no need to load the modules. So that error message doesn't mean anything. What I would be interested in seeing is your dmesg on startup, specifically the ALSA related portions.

fwiw, here's the part of my sounds related kernel config that's different from yours:

# Generic devices
#
# CONFIG_SND_DUMMY is not set
# CONFIG_SND_VIRMIDI is not set
# CONFIG_SND_MTPAV is not set
# CONFIG_SND_SERIAL_U16550 is not set
# CONFIG_SND_MPU401 is not set

CONFIG_SND_POWERMAC=y

I have a 12inch ibook G4 but I think the sound related part should be the same. I'm using kernel 2.6.19.1.

I also have the habit of not using the /etc/init.d/alsasound. I just set up alsa once using amixer and alsamixer, then
alsactl store
to store the settings. afaik,You have to use amixer to turn on Master. After that, I use
alsactl restore
in /etc/conf.d/local.start

Not sure why I started doing things this way - maybe I just got annoyed seeing those error messages regarding failed module loading. But works for me.

Hope that helps.

quatsch:
it says in the FAQ to not use the snd_powermac driver. It was included in the default kernel, but that didn't work either. When i customized the sound portion, i took that out. I doubt it matters if it's in there

have you tried the snd_powermac driver? I think I used it on an older powerbook (aluminum, 12inch, 1.33Ghz) that I had - not sure, I don't have the pbook anymore but might be worth a try.

It seems that model has a TAS3004 chipset, but no fabric. I would try the powermac driver too, disable the AOA driver. If it loads, then that model is still supported with the powermac driver.

i had the very same problem when i upgraded to 2.6.18-r3 (from 2.6.17-r5) a little over three months ago.
i could only do some hit-and-trial exercise, to find out that this configuration works on my ibook g4 14"!
Code:
#
# ALSA PowerMac devices
#
CONFIG_SND_POWERMAC=y
CONFIG_SND_POWERMAC_AUTO_DRC=y

#
# Apple Onboard Audio driver
#
CONFIG_SND_AOA=y
CONFIG_SND_AOA_FABRIC_LAYOUT=y
# CONFIG_SND_AOA_ONYX is not set
CONFIG_SND_AOA_TAS=y
# CONFIG_SND_AOA_TOONIE is not set
CONFIG_SND_AOA_SOUNDBUS=y
CONFIG_SND_AOA_SOUNDBUS_I2S=y
i can't offer any reasoning for this (the need to set both CONFIG_SND_POWERMAC=y and CONFIG_SND_AOA_TAS=y) though!

I know this thread is a little old, but just an FYI for anyone who built the ALSA drivers into their kernel and are getting messages like this on boot:
Quote:

* Loading ALSA modules ...
* Loading: snd-card-0 ...
FATAL: Module snd_aoa not found. [ !! ]
* ERROR: Failed to load necessary drivers [ ok ]

The issue is that you're still telling ALSA to load the modules on boot. Since you don't have these modules any more, it returns this error. To fix this problem, remove any aliases that you added to /etc/modules.d/alsa and then re-run modules-update. This will fix the problem. :)

Does anyone has OSS-emulation/ALSA working on the iBook G4?

Sure, plenty of people do, what's the problem you're having?

Hi JoseJX!
On Titanium Powerbooks ALSA sound seems broken since 2.6.20.
Ubuntu Feisty bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/87652
Ubuntu PPC forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=412151&page=3

Found a thread in this forum that maybe is related:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4027005.html#4027005

As Ubuntu has dropped support for PPC, there is not much help one can expect from there... Do you have any ideas about this bug?
Regards!
Anders

Well, I can't speak for Ubuntu, but looking at that thread and bug, there seems to be two different issues:

1. No sound
2. Sound starts, but stops quickly afterwards

Which issue are you having?

For the first:
Can I see your kernel config? What machine exactly is breaking? Can I see a diff of the output of dmesg between the two? What was the last kernel that worked properly? Have you tried a git bisect yet?

For the second:
Are you sure no daemon is using the sound card at the same time? Have you tried simply booting to console, making sure nothing else is running and playing a sample using alsaplayer or similar?

I'm almost certain there is only one issue here: 2.

I believe its late Titanium Powerbooks (mine is a Pb IV 1 Ghz). According to the launchpad report the last working kernel was 2.6.20-1-ref-powerpc, my last working was 2.6.17... I tested 2.6.20-15 (ships with Feisty), 2.6.21-rc7 and 2.6.21 (released today). Alsa-libs (libasound2) and Alsa-drivers through 1.0.13-1ubuntu5 to 1.0.14-rc3 from the ALSA site.

And it is always the same symptoms:
snd-powermac loads (snd-aoa-* does not recognize the card) - sound plays a randomly short period never exceeding 5 sec. No distortion - just sudden stop.
Booting the 2.6.17 kernel brings back sound...

Current config:
Vanilla kernel 2.6.21 with ALSA modules , libasound2 1.0.14-rc3

2.6.21 config
dmesg 2.6.17 to 2.6.21 diff

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I believe it's related in some way...
Cheers!
Anders

I deleted your kernel config since it's most likely not relevant.

Did you try playing sound from a console with no other daemons running?
Can you verify exactly which kernel broke it (git bisect will help to figure out which it is)?

You do need to make sure that the ALSA driver version matches the ALSA library version, i.e. drivers from 1.0.14-rc3 should really only be used with alsa-libs 1.0.14-rc3, etc.

Does dmesg report anything? Is there a difference in dmesg between the working kernel and the non-working kernel?

To be honest, I haven't seen anyone report this problem here, so I'm not sure you can rule out an Ubuntu issue.

Got truncated... Posted links to the diff and config...

Same problem in runlevel 1.
Have not tried bisect (slow machine...)

Tried that too... No difference.

There could of course be some Ubuntu specific patch to alsa-libs (but I tried the ones from alsa.org)
Thanks!

Thanks. Interestingly, I don't see ALSA starting in the 2.6.17 config. Maybe it's loaded later? Is the 2.6.21 dmesg log from when the sound stopped working? Or did it not get to that yet?

snd-powermac has to be in /etc/modules on these machines...
The sound issue appeared in 2.6.20 (dist-upgrade to Feisty, others have clean installs).
In my 2.6.21 kernel the alsa modules are debug enabled - maybe accounts for boot messages.

By the way - is there a recent (post 2.6.20) PPC Gentoo live-cd somewhere that I could try?

Okay, but like I said, the ALSA module was not loaded in the 2.6.17 dmesg log. That said, I didn't see the OSS driver either. :p The ALSA init message should show regardless of ALSA debugging.

What I meant by stopped working, I wanted to know if you had tried to play audio and had it fail in that log? I'm interested to see if the kernel says anything about it.

There are no PPC Gentoo LiveCDs that recent, sorry.

There are no error messages whatsoever... (syslog, kern.log etc.)

aplay (or any sound app, esd, xmms...) does not crash, it just hangs - and blocks the sound device.
here is a aplay gdb backtrace:
Code:

0x0fd2a9e0 in poll () from /lib/libc.so.6

I don't use ppc, but according to a discussion today on alsa-user email list, it is a problem with the powerbook titanium 4. It is no sound because both alsa and the sound card are waiting for a signal to come in order to continue their job. The signal never come due to a bug in the kernel acpi sub system. So, it is not an alsa bug in this case. Lee Revell said the following:
Quote:
Check whether the interrupt count for the soundcard in
/proc/interrupts continues to increase once the playback app hangs.
If not then try booting with noacpi and/or noapic and see if the situation improves.
Usually these problems are outside the scope of ALSA, most often the bug is in the kernel's ACPI subsystem. But it's worth a try...

There is no apic or acpi on PowerPC, so that suggestion doesn't make any sense unfortunately. However, there could still be issues with interrupt distribution. The thread is here: http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/2007-May/036496.html

I've been having problems getting alsa to load on a G3 PB also.

modprobe snd_powermac
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting snd_powermac (/lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r4/alsa-driver/ppc/snd-powermac.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

dmesg|tail
Code:
snd_powermac: Unknown symbol of_get_property
snd_powermac: Unknown symbol cuda_poll
snd_powermac: Unknown symbol of_device_is_compatible
snd_powermac: Unknown symbol cuda_request

alsamixer gives the same error as in the original post.

I've tried external drivers (media-sound/alsa-driver) and right now am using in-kernel drivers as modules. With the external drivers, compilation always fails at some point on alsa-driver. I've tried every available version, from 1.0.13 to the latest ~ppc, 1.0.14.

I'm starting to suspect there may be upstream breakage.... as soon as I'm back home I can try removing in-kernel alsa and re-building external drivers and post where the errors occur.

yeah... did that. Several times. Still nothing.

Get nearly the same errors after make modules_install (in dmesg):
Code:

WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r4/alsa-driver/ppc/snd-powermac.ko needs unknown symbol of_get_property
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r4/alsa-driver/ppc/snd-powermac.ko needs unknown symbol cuda_poll
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r4/alsa-driver/ppc/snd-powermac.ko needs unknown symbol of_device_is_compatible
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.21-gentoo-r4/alsa-driver/ppc/snd-powermac.ko needs unknown symbol cuda_request

I got rid of the cuda errors by turning on -duh- CUDA support, even though this isn't cuda based, judging from the technotes from developer.apple.com. Is there something else I may have missed in my kernel config?

Now that I'm finally back home I'll get the build errors from stable alsa-driver.
