So, clearly I'm about to go to kernel.org and download the more recently vanilla-sources manually. But, I'm curious why 2.6.21_rc6 is even in portage if it only has the ~ppc keyword... is this kernel somehow not supported on ~x86?
I realize that most people don't bother with the vanilla-sources, but I am using a bunch of patches to get the Linux kernel working on a Core2Duo Macbook Pro, so I prefer using the standard kernel.
Anyway, I was just trying to figure out what's going on here... _________________ The name that can be named is not the eternal name. |

Then why post in portage & programming and not in the kernel forum? Why not search changelogs, bugs.gentoo.org? But most importantly, why bothering? |

The sys-kernel/vanilla-sources package is provided as a convenience to users who want or need to use it, it is not supported on any architecture. I do not know why it is keyworded as it presently is. Even so, it is not necessary to manually download any version which is in the portage tree, just use /etc/portage/package.keywords to accept that package.
Excerpted from man 5 portage
Quote: | Note: In addition to the normal values from ACCEPT_KEYWORDS package.keywords supports three special tokens:
* package is visible if it is stable on any architecture
~* package is visible if it is in testing on any architecture
** package is always visible (KEYWORDS are ignored completely) |
Masked packages can be similarly accepted by use of /etc/portage/package.unmask, which is also documented in man 5 portage.
Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software. |

So, this isn't a kernel issue at all, it's just a question of how the ebuild is set up, which seemed to me to have more to do with portage. As I said, I needed bleeding edge sources for the hardware/patchset I'm using.
Anyway, thanks for your time. _________________ The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
