I use fluxbox. When I launch xterm inside X and type alsamixer, the xterm window goes black. Anyone know why? |

How about running trace on it, which might let you see if its segfaulting in a particular library:
Code: | xterm -e strace alsamixer |
I saw another post sometime where segfault was the problem. _________________ Read 'Free Software - Free Society' by RM Stallman |

OK, instead of using fluxbox, can you try running alsamixer in a console based VT, e.g. CTRL+ALT+F1? _________________ Read 'Free Software - Free Society' by RM Stallman |

When you switch to VT with CTRL+ALT+F1 you are leaving X temporarily and if you log in on the console then you are not needing to use an xterm. If you log in at the console in text only (no X), if you are getting errors at that point, that would suggest something is adrift with your system. Can you make a note of some of the errors and post them here?
If you can log at the console without errors, proceed and run alsamixer, paste some of the errors here.
(I'm assuming that you have run alsaconfig as root already right?) _________________ Read 'Free Software - Free Society' by RM Stallman |
