glxgears is a pretty worthless benchmark for any modern card.

If you dont have wi**ows you're crazy! With that card, I would even dual boot. You can play any game on the market (probably even UT2007 next year).. 8O

Dell c510
kernel 2.6.10
ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY
Intel 1.7 Ghz
Code:
541 frames in 5.0 seconds = 108.200 FPS
552 frames in 5.0 seconds = 110.400 FPS
554 frames in 5.0 seconds = 110.800 FPS
551 frames in 5.0 seconds = 110.200 FPS
554 frames in 5.0 seconds = 110.800 FPS
552 frames in 5.0 seconds = 110.400 FPS
553 frames in 5.0 seconds = 110.600 FPS

heheh funny if I use the ati in opengl I lose the direct rendering but win 60-70 fps.
any ideas how can this numbers be improved??

Hehe ;) Yes I do have windows. But not because of the games, just because we have Visualbasic dot net in my school :( Im thinking of downgrading to a 6600gt from nvidia or something because I never play :p. I did play alot when I bought it ofcource, but not now. :\

I'm pretty linux only and I have a recent card, though his is more recent... my 6800 is still up there.

you don't gotta be a hardcore gamer to make the games you do play be enjoyable. Also, with these results, are you guys getting anything noticable in regards to actual gameplay? How do you do in Doom 3? I half half the ram speed of most of these cards and run 9000+ with 24bpp... in fact here's the specifics:

45788 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9157.518 FPS
46175 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9234.936 FPS
41879 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8375.666 FPS
46040 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9207.925 FPS
46287 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9257.246 FPS
46139 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9227.676 FPS
45995 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9198.935 FPS
46474 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9294.798 FPS

This is on a dual screen setup using Xinerama in KDE with a few daemons running (syslog-ng, webfs, acpid, etc). both are at 1280x1024@75hz.

I also play Doom 3 at 1280x1024 on High with 8xAF and 2xQ AA, and play at playable speeds 30-40+.

Lastly, I also noticed that unlike nVidia cards, ATI cards still work to whatever extent even when the CPU is maxed out. I would go ATI for my next card if the next gen card was decent and or they stopped working for Microsoft... oh well, nvidia also worked for microsoft, so hate everyone, eh?

Benchmarks are meant to help you determine performance levels for applications that you use. If you play quake, benchmark quake, if you play xbill, benchmark that... After all, what good is a benchmark on someone else's machine if you don't even have that game/application?

And if you don't have fgl_glxgears working you should get that fixed... http://rage3d.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=88 is a good spot to get help with that.

Radeon 9800xt, ATI proprietary driver 8.20.8

fgl_glxgears = 945fps

normal glxgears = 4733fps

Could someone tell me why the gears application uses 100% cpu when it tests gfx card render power? 8p ... makes little sense to me.
