SU authentication problem

I am new to gentoo, this is my first install and everything is wonderful, except the fact that the su command will not authenticate. I have tried cerating multiple users with no luck. I checked the /etc/pam.d/su file, and all seems in order. Not really sure where to proceed, any ideas.

In order to su, the user account must be part of the "wheel" group.
