This is not a problem for me anymore, since I've finished migrating to modular X. This post is here just for confirmation by others of what I think I found.
Term. #1: lynx (browsing gentoo.org's modular X migration how-to)
Term. #2: revdep-rebuild
Term. #5: alsamixer
Term. #6: ogg123 somefile.ogg
While term 6 is on-screen, the music file plays flawlessly. While term 2 is on-screen, the audio skips and pauses, especially while gcc is compiling. This happens also when using mpg123, not just ogg123, as well as with (many) multiple different files.
My conclusion: the on-screen terminal receives (at least just slightly) more priority than other terminals.
Not sure if this is supposed to happen, but I found it a little disappointing that I couldn't listen to music while also watching X compile. |

change the niceness of portage to give it slightly less of a priority, and alsa should work fine again. _________________ The Geek formerly known as -Freestyling-
