Am partway through the install process several times and I keep getting emerge fail after 10+ minutes of compiling.

When it fails, the chrooted console just appears to freeze, whilst showing the message:

INIT: version 2.86 reloading.

Consoles CTRL+ALT+F2 and above still work though. And I can still ssh into the system, its just the emerge process thats gone dead (shows up as a Zombie process under ps axu which cannot be killed). I have to reboot to get emerge to work again.

Not really sure where to start looking for this one, if someone has any ideas it'd be appreciated.

1. CPU temperature
2. Not sufficient or unstable power supply
3. RAM defective; try to check it with http://www.memtest.org/
4. Check the connectors in your computer: power, SATA/IDE, graphics card, ...
