|
hi guys,
I'm an italian student developing a network topology rappresentation system for the Computer Networks' course of the University of Padova (Italy).
Our lab is made up of SNMP-managable devices accessible to the students where they can modify ips, routing tables, and so on.
Now we are looking for a tool to retrive snmp data in an easy way.
We are thinking to use Perl and net-snmp to solve the retrival of the datas.
We would like to retrive informations like:
* device name, description, operating system used, actual up-time
* list of device interfaces
* per interface informations such as packets sent/recived, bytes in/out, status up/down, name, mac-address
* routing and fowarding table. (VERY VERY IMPORTANT TO DRAW THE NetworkMAP)
Can you suggest some script/module that does this?
We would like somethinf easy to use so we could concentrate on other important aspects of the project.
Consider that we are always aware of each device-ip (even if the students the IP the devices are reachable via serial-cli)
I've found snmp-info (http://snmp-info.sourceforge.net/) but I doesn't have the experience to say if it can be usefull to me or not!
Please help me!
Every comment is really very very appreciated
P.S. I've also look at other network discovery tools such as Nedi (http://www.nedi.ch/), Netdisco (http://netdisco.org/) and Network Administration Visualized (http://metanav.ntnu.no/moin.cgi/) but they seems too complex for use and we can't use CDP as discovery protocol. |

depends on how much comfort you want to have; in easiest case snmpwalk should get you everything you need (included in net-snmp).
When you have the correct MIBs for your devices installed it should be easily possible to search for the correct terms, otherwise you'd need to know which OID is what. _________________ Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself |

I don't know the devices it will be used with. That's the problem... |

that should be the easy part.
When you snmpwalk a device without explicit OID it starts at SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2 where normally the device gives its name, model and stuff.
With this info you can walk over to e.g. http://www.mibdepot.com/ and fetch the neccessary MIBs for the devices you have; alternatively the manufacturers HP of course. _________________ Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself |
