I searched around and tried different methods to get my camera working, but nothing works.

I am on vanilla-sources 2.6.207.

I compiled Device Drivers -> Multimedia devices -> Video for Linux into the kernel, not as a module.

Then I unmasked and emerged the "media-video/gspcav1" package.

I can't go to the UVC site http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/ because it says "403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access /index.html on this server. Apache/1.3.34 Server at linux-uvc.berlios.de Port 80"

Then I tried going to a webcam site, and it could not detect my webcam.

modprobe videodev and modprobe quickcam both don't work because it says "FATAL: Module not found." for both.

What can I do?

Also, if I want to the microphone that's on the USB as well, how do I activate that?

I don't have a webcam, but if you compiled those options into your kernel, you won't be able to modprobe them because, well, they aren't modules. Set them to "M" in your kernel, recompile (make sure you do 'make modules_install' -- actually I can't remember if that's only necessary with 2.4 kernels, but run it anyway :p).

Then try your modprobe commands.

Your camera is supposed to work with linux-uvc driver.
(To be sure, run lsusb command (part of sys-apps/usbutils) find the line corresponding to camera and check if its ID matches 0x046d:0x08c5).
linux-uvc is currently available in portage as masked ebuild. Unmask it, emerge, and you should be all set.
(You don't need to modprobe statically compiled modules, they're already loaded).

I am having a problem with my Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000. I am using the linux-uvc package, and everything in the kernel is right (to my knowledge). When I launch camstream, and go to load a camera, there are two options.. "vivi" and "USB Video Class device". If I unplug the camera, then the UVC device will go away, so, that tells me that the UVC device is indeed my camera. Now, when I go to the device settings, and change anything (ie screen size, brightness, or any other aspect of the camera) the program freezes, and I have to xkill it. Also, the only picture I am getting is a black image. I could care less about the microphone, I would just like to get the camera working. Any suggestions. BTW, here is the output from a term when it freezes.

Code:
  D: CVideoSettingsDlg::SizeChanged(176x144)
  D: CVideoSettingsDlg::FramerateChanged(10)
  D: No Philips webcam detected, removing extension tab
  D: CCamPanel::SetSize(176x144)
  D: CCamPanel::SetImageSize(176x144)
  D: CCamPanel::SetVisibleSize(176x144)
  D: CCamPanel::SetSize(176x144)
  D: CCamPanel::SetImageSize(176x144)
  D: CCamPanel::SetVisibleSize(176x144)
  >> void CWebCamViewer::RecalcTotalViewSize()
  << void CWebCamViewer::RecalcTotalViewSize()
<< CWebCamViewer::CWebCamViewer(CVideoDevice*, QWidget*, const char*)
D: >> CVideoDevice::IncrementPalette(0)
D: >> CVideoDeviceLinux::StartCapture()
D: CVideoDeviceLinux::SetPalette picked palette 0 []
W: Unknown palette
D: >> CVideoDeviceLinux::CreateImagesRGB()
D: << CVideoDeviceLinux::CreateImagesRGB()
D: << CVideoDeviceLinux::StartCapture()
D: << CVideoDevice::IncrementPalette()
D: >> CVideoDeviceLinux::run()...

***** FREEZE POINT *****
Code:
D: >> CVideoDeviceLinux::SetSize(640x480)
D: >> CVideoDeviceLinux::StopCapture()
D: Waiting for capture thread to stop...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Will
