Hi there.
Since i installed first time gentoo, i had to configure my lan. I use the well know guide "How to Setup a Home Router Guide". I configured for ethernet and wireless using dnsmasq like they suggest and configured iptables. Everything was working well. Cause i had to use my wireless card in other conmputer, some time ago, i'm using only the ethernet. Now i can use again my wireless card and i figured out that something was really bad.
I thought that dnsmasq was doing his job, but i now i know that is not.
The reason is, even if i get the dnsmasq process down, my router computer still given the same IP that he was when was up. I check this out when i try to get a valid IP to my wireless network and he gives me a physical connection address, like 169.254.254.84.
I don't understand what is going on. How does my router computer is given an IP to my ethernet lan if i dont have neither dnsmasq or dhcpd running on my computer.
I check the kernel and i had the option to make my computer a router. I take it off but still give me an IP.
Sorry my english.
Anyone can help me please? |

That's a self-issued address. |

It's what some network devices do if they are not given an IP address. |

really?! never heard about that!!
But can you tell me why if i configured dnsmasq the device gives the same IP, of course, reserving different IP or gamma?!!
And why i configured my wireless lan to receive a gamma of IP's and now dont work. I had this same
configuration some time ago and it works perfectly. What could be missing to connection beetwen dnsmasq and devices is falling?
Thank you again for your time |

I think you might have a problem with DNSMASQ as the device is not being given an IP address.
Maybe you could turn off iptables for a quick check in case that is blocking.
After that you'd need to post with an appropriate subject line - maybe edit... |
