Warning, newbie question. I fished arround but cant find the answer to an seemingly obvious question. If I want a single boot system, just Gentoo, do I still need GRUB/LILO ? If not, do I need to do anything not clearly labeled in the install doc ??. I followed the directions well, got all the way to "lilo" and I think I trashed the conf. file somewhere, but it went fine till then. When I took out the CD it said "system not found". Gonna give it another try tonight.

Yes.
You do, the bootloader tells the system where the kernel is. Decrese the value of delay time to make it appear on the screen for less time (it's like not having one)
Use either lilo or grub for this. Using lilo is easier i think.

I just switched from lilo to grub... lilo is easier to configure (the syntax is similar to fstab atleast). but i really dig what grub has to offer. it's your call, of course- yey linux. you need one or the other, like mentioned above. so educate and decide for yourself:

good luck, it's not that bad! _________________ "I'm a bipolar depressive, from a line of bipolar depressives. That's how I come to write so good."
