I today installed smartmontools on two machines:

Version 5.36 (stable) on an x86 machine - when smartd is started, several messages are written in /var/log/messages and when "-M test" is added in /etc/smartd.conf, a test message goes to the user indicated with the "-m" parameter in /etc/smartd.conf.

Version 5.36 on an ~amd64 machine - when smartd is started, no message is written in /var/log/messages (although I get the "ok" via the console) and the -M test addition to /etc/smartd.conf does not has any effect.

Also, on a sata disk the following line in smartd.conf makes smartd not starting ("!!" via the console)
Quote:
/dev/sda -a -o on -S on -I 194 -H -l error -l selftest -s (S/../.././04|L/../../6/05) -m root -M test

For this sata disk, I also get a error message:
Quote:
smartctl -i /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.37 [x86_64-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen

You might need to add -d ata to the options for the S-ATA drive.
