Hi. When I have applications in my desktop, and someone else wants to use my computer, I want to be able to lock the screen and open another desktop for the person, and later be able to resume my desktop.

I could do this with one or two clicks if I used gnome, but I am using

x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r5
x11-apps/xdm-1.0.5
x11-wm/e-9999 (enlightenment 17 from cvs).
x11-misc/xlockmore-5.21-r1

How can I do this with this setup?
Thanks.

Drop to a text terminal (<ctrl><alt><F2>) then at the prompt type
> startx -- :1

that ought to start a new x server. I do this all the time, keeping three different sessions running for various family members, and it works like a charm. Not sure how it will work with xdm though.

Thanks, I'll try it as soon as xorg-server finishes compiling. Last time I played with startx, it crashed the computer, and I don't want a compilation to be aborted by a crash.

It could be a hardware problem (my computer has experienced hardware problems in the past, which were fixed (perhaps not completely?) when the memory was cleaned).
But to be safe, I replaced CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -fgcse-after-reload -fweb " with
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

I am now reemerging important packages like glibc and xorg-server.

By the way, what packages are likely to crash a PC if defective?
The kernel is the most obvious, but it already filters CFLAGS IIRC.

Some other possibilities are
dbus
module-init-tools
kexec-tools
udev
init

But I am totally pulling this out of my behind. What do you think?
