Hi

I'm using a statistics software package called R (dev-lang/R). The latest version availible in portage is 1.6.1, which is rather old (they have a very stable release scheme, with a new versiuon every 6 months).

Now, of course I might build the new version myself or create a new ebuild (if I knew how). On the other hand I think it is a piece of cake (if you know what you're doing) to update the current ebuild - I just think someone needs to be notified that there are in fact a new version available (basically I think you just need to point the ebuild at a newer source package).

Whom and how do I notify - or do I just shut up and be grateful for what I got :)

You should file a report in bugzilla.

I just don't consider this to be a bug :) I addition I don't want to irritate people ("the masses are constantly demanding updates, sigh").

But if this is the preferred way do it, I will in a couple of days.

I originally thought of the new status (as I recall it) of "package maintainers". If - say - anyone had /dev-lang as responsibility I could send a nice "version update notification" and the person in question could ignore it or forward it to the relevant people.

Anyone else have inputs?

It's not a bug but it's an enhancement. You should file a report for the product "Gentoo Linux", component "ebuilds" with the severity "enhancement". The correct maintainer should then treat the issue.

This is more like it. I didn't know of the enhancement possibility.

Also, you could try to use the old ebuild and make a new one and submit it.
