Getting more performance out of the e1000 driver and UDP

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting more performance out of the e1000 driver for UDP?

For instance on the 32 bit version of Bind we can get 20k queries per second.
Same hardware on the 64 bit can get 12k queries per second.
Same hardware on FreeBSD 64 bit is 22k queries per second.
(The same compile options were used to compile Bind also).

So are there any kernel or network settings we should make to get more small UDP packet performance?
