Hiya!

OK, this will hopefully be the last problem I have with this set up, but since the other two have been quite esy fixes, I have ahunch this one will be too...

Basically, I cannot play DVD's. At least not as a user. As root, everything is more-or-less-fine (minor alsa problems that I'm fixing now), but for some reason *both* mplayer and xine give an error messeage like:
Code:

$ mplayer dvd://1
MPlayer dev-SVN-rUNKNOWN-4.1.1 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz (Family: 15, Model: 2, Stepping: 9)
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 SSE SSE2

Playing dvd://1.
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/hdc with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/hdc for reading
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/hdc
No stream found to handle url dvd://1

Exiting... (End of file)

so no DVD. For some reason, though, playback is not a problem for root. I have set the dvd region correctly, and have added the user to both audio and video groups too. Clearly, there is some sort permission problem that has me stumped...

Also, sudo access to mplayer gives a third result, in that playback works, but *only* in fullscreen mode! What am I missing?!?

Many thanks in advance!

Check to see if you are in the cdrom group, if not add yourself.

already in it. That doesn't seem to be it...

Since both mplayer and xine have the same issue (i.e., DVD playback as user bummed, but root OK), I'm thinking it has something to do with the access to libdvdcss. However, since this is a rather unfamiliar prblem for me, I wouldn't know where to begin! That is, using libdvdcss in the past has been, for me, a non-issue. So if that is where the problem is, I got issues!

You have cdrom in your groups in your current session (i.e. you type "groups" in and you get cdrom)? You didn't just add it and not update your session by either closing all open sessions or using
Code:
newgrp - cdrom

That's the only permissions problem I can think of. Your libdvdcss installation should be fine if root can do it and sudo can do it.

Grrr... it would seem that a reboot of the system has fixed it, but I would mention that it has been rebooted since adding the user to the appropriate group. So what's changed? Beats me!

However, I see that my alsa problem has also become worse! But that's OK, I know how to fix that one.

Sorry for the hassle, but reboot so rarely fixes anything in linux that I never try it until sombody reminds me to ;)

Cheers!
