how to have a dos box on gentoo-mips

hi,
i need a dos box on my gentoo-mips
emerging the old version of dosbox has success, but dosbox is based on SDL (video and it fails with the following error

"Exit to error: Can't init SDL Unable to memory map the video hardware
Press enter to continue."

the hw of the sgi octane2 is particular, the gfx i mean

the solution to this problem seems to be
1) replacing the SDL with something supported
2) using something different from dosemu (qemu is not emerging, boch is too slow)

suggestions, idea ?
