Could you post the output when you run it from an xterm (add the -d option for debugging info). It might be helpful. _________________ Wrynn

1) unmerge gaim
2) edit make.conf and type in the USE-section: USE="... -gnome" (with a - (minus))
3) emerge gaim
4) edit make.conf and type in the USE-section: USE="... gnome" (without a - (minus)). |

starting gaim from xterm with -d shows the following:
prefs: Reading /home/.gaim/prefs.xml
prefs: Finished reading /home/.gaim/prefs.xml
gaimrc: Loading preferences.
gaimrc: start load_prefs
gaimrc: starting read tag 0
gaimrc: ending read tag 0
gaimrc: starting read tag 1
sound: Initializing sound output drivers.
then nothing happens, i'm not being returned to bash. seems like it hangs when initializing sound? i'm using arts+alsa. the only thing i think is strange that on startup, when the alsa-driver (intel8x0) is started, there's a errmsg "-e error: alsactl not found" (i don't remember exactly, but it means this). sound works fine anyway, so i've ignored this error so far. i'm using gaim with kde3 by the way, i have -gnome in my USE variable. |

You must set back -gnome to gnome in the USE-section after you have installed gaim. |

I had the same issue, until I realized that I had xmms on eveytime I tried to start gaim and it would wait at that same sound init line. If you turn off xmms it will start as usual (I guess this is a bug maybe?) |

I´m totaly wrong. Think I was to tired when I read your problem.
Thought you had problem with the gnome-panel.
Well, did it just stop working? Maybe it has with your sound drivers to do.
Try to recompile your kernel. It takes just 20 minutes. |

well now i just went into the kde control center, turned artsd off and - surprise - suddenly gaim came up ... so it seems gaim and artsd don't like each other. is there a fix for that? i can't always turn off artsd when i want to use gaim! |

I had to use
artsdsp gaim
I think gaim is trying to access /dev/dsp directly when kde has it locked because of artsd _________________ Later...Gator...
