Could you post the output of emerge?

Have you set up your network correctly and copied your /etc/resolv.conf to the chroot environment? If networking does not work the output of ifconfig and cat < /etc/resolv.conf also will be helpful.

the only thing i can see is that its trying a bunch of different servers and cant find the files that its looking for on those servers then eventually times out

i have it running right now and it stopped at the same part if i can copy and past the output from all i will

ok here is the info you requested

OK, if you can get online with firefox there shouldn't be a problem with networking.

As I see, the installer wants to install sys-apps/pciutils-2.2.0-r1 but this packages does not exist anymore, so obviously your portage tree is out of date. I am not familiar with the gentoo installer as I always installed Gentoo by command line, but somewhere in the installation procedure there must be an option for updating the portage tree or running emerge --sync. Make sure that this option is enabled, because the 2006.1 release is about 8 months old and for most packages there are new versions available.

The installation manual actually is a step-by-step manual.

If you meant you wanted to update just the Portage tree from the graphical installation, that's done by simply executing "emerge --sync". There's not more involved.

well the emerge --sync didnt work with the live cd install. and from what i read youll frown on the gui install but its the easiest way for what i want

i had this system working but something went wrong so i just decided to re install it all together and thats when i got into this mess

but i did get it to work by selecting a site to downlad the file and then i was able to select how i got the portage tree and all was fine and dandy

so i guess you can say problem solved or worked around
