That was about time. I think at least half or maybe more of the lockups or annoyances with my Ultra 2 are due to this driver. It behaves strangely if if finds hardware failures on a medium like a CD /dev/scd0 it puts all devices on the SCSI bus offline inclusive /dev/sda where / resides, sometimes reads only the first 700mb of a dvd like if it thinks is a CD and so on....
can't wait untill I can test it
I know it will take a while before it is stable on gentoo

I can say that because I wrote the old driver The new one supports so much more stuff, is so much more stable and well architected, and is about half the size of the old one. It's always like that. Furthermore it allows ports to non-sparc platforms. Using this the ncr53c9x.c driver can be deleted (it's a very old clone of my original ESP driver chopped up to be portable to other platforms) and a lot of scsi mid-layer cruft kept around specifically for these drivers can die. |

Great part of the ultra 2 hangs were related to the sbus iommu code being buggy. This is fixed in gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r7 (not yet on mainstream 2.6.20, yes in 2.6.21). Although the ESP driver as Dave pointed is a pile of poo that's in others aspects (no tag queueing, no sync cdrom and other stuff).
But the bulk of hangs on ultra 2 disk i/o were sbus iommu... _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

Well I will wait a while to see if it improves, it works indeed.
What I cannot understand is why after a media_error on a dvd (/dev/scd0 scsi id 6) it puts /dev/sda (root /) offline. |
