i unmerged alsa-driver alsa-lib and alsa-utils
rm -rf /lib/modules/2.6.20-gentoo-r6
make modules_install in /usr/src/linux
downloaded alsa-driver-1.0.14-rc3
sh configure
make
make install
sh snddevices(is not in emerge alsa-driver for gentoo)
emerge alsa-lib alsa-utils
now alsamixer works i unmuted it
and now kde gives me
Unable to start the sound to retrieve possible sound IO methods
and keeps on restarting the sound system when i disable enable the sound system and test sound
i cancelled on the 8th attempt, rebooting then trying it again |

emerge --unmerge alsa-driver alsa-lib alsa-utils
rm -rf /lib/modules/2.6.20-gentoo-r6
make modules_install in /usr/src/linux
modules-install -f
downloaded and installed alsa-driver and alsa-lib 1.0.14-rc3 and emerged alsa-utils 1.0.14-rc2-rc3(which i was thinking had support for rc3)
sh configure, make, make install (READ txt files like INSTALL OR README in the directory you extract any downloaded compilable program into)
sh snddevices(which wasn't in the 1.0.14-rc2 version of alsa-driver or alsa-lib)
alsamixer
alsamixer worked! and i unmuted it and tried out a mp3 with aplay
SWEET SUCCESS!
it may be a garbled fuzzy whine thats intelligible but its the first thing to come out of my speakers after i've been screwing around w/ gentoo for 7 days!
aplay a wav file worked perfectly, now i can say it works.
BUT
kde still wont start up the sound system even after i tried rebooting it. when i disable then enable the sound system and try to test sound
it keeps on restarting the sound system. does alsa-driver-1.0.14-rc3 conflict with arts, kde's sound system? kinda glad i put this problem here in desktop environments, cuz thats the problem i'm having now is sound works, tested it out with aplay, but kde refuses to start the sound system |
