Hey guys... opinion on best sound card under Gentoo? I currently have an i810-derivative onboard the mobo, but it sounds kinda dull and flat (nforce4 chipset) especially when compared to my previous 3-yr old nforce2 soundstorm. So I'm looking to disable the onboard and throw in a PCI card. Which is the best one?
Also needs to be 64-bit compatible, if that matters...

I'd suggest something from Turtle Beach. I've got a Montego II Quadzilla (4-channel) from several years ago and it does very nicely. AFAIK all of TB's cards use chipsets that are supported by ALSA. |

SB lives and audigy's are pretty well supported, and you can get one for pretty cheap. Since every one of them for the past 8 years or so are all based on the emu10k chip, and the official, Creative drivers for that chip was opensourced a long ass time ago, support is pretty solid. |

M-Audio Audiophile 2496. Pretty cheap these days. High quality, no resampling like on the Creative Cards. It's got Cinch outputs plus a digital one. Drivers work like a charm. 64 bit? Don't know. |
