Hi,
after i upgraded my Samsung X20 to 2Gb RAM, i recompiled the kernel using the

option. the kernel detected it. at least when i checked top that's what it said.
However when starting the X-server the cursrer of the loginscreen did not "blink" (mouse is working, but no keyboard) and there was no way of logging in.
when i tried to log in on the console normal useres could not log in (it only showed the last login time). root was still able to login however. i have no idea as to why my gentoo doesn't seem to cope with 2Gb ram. if someone could help me out there i'd be very thankful  .
when i changed the feature back to what it was before (High Mem support off) it worked flawless as before, however only with 1Gb of ram, of course... :-/

| What type of installation are you using? 32 or 64 Bit? |

| i'm using a 32bit machine. Samsung X20 1730 XVM V - that's a pentium M 1,73 ghz centrino notebook. but that shouldn't be a problem, right? |

| You probably messed something ELSE up in the kernel config when you enabled high momery support. |

i thought high mem support has to be turned on when you have more than 1 GB installed. at least that's what the documentation says

@alex: my system is very stable and i changed nothing besides the high mem option. plus: when i changed it back to what it was it worked as flawlessly as before |

| If you have any external kernel modules (like nvidia-drivers or ati-drivers), then you will need to emerge those again after recompiling your kernel. |

| Dunno then. In any case I don't think you need highmem support if you have 3GB of ram or less and the mem/system split thing is set at 3GB instead of the default 2GB. |
