I am trying to get framebuffer & vesa support when I boot so I can see Tux or Larry - but I am having to joy :(

Video card is a NVidia G4-Ti4600 and iiyama Vision Master Pro 510 22"
grep -i vid < /proc/pci :
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti4600] (rev 163)

This is what I have set in my kernel .config @ the moment :

#
# Console drivers
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT is not set
# CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE is not set

#
# Frame-buffer support
#
CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FB_LOGO_TUX is not set
CONFIG_FB_LOGO_LARRY=y
# CONFIG_FB_LOGO_GENTOO is not set
# CONFIG_FB_LOGO_G is not set
# CONFIG_FB_LOGO_PENGUIN is not set
# CONFIG_FB_LOGO_POWEREDBY is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RIVA is not set
# CONFIG_FB_CLGEN is not set
# CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_PM3 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
# CONFIG_FB_VGA16 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_HGA is not set
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
# CONFIG_FB_MATROX is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ATY is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ATY128 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_NEOMAGIC is not set
# CONFIG_FB_3DFX is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VOODOO1 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_TRIDENT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VIRTUAL is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_SPLASHSCREEN is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_ADVANCED is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_FONTWIDTH8_ONLY is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_FONTS is not set
CONFIG_FONT_8x8=y
CONFIG_FONT_8x16=y

grub.conf is very basic :
title=Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3

I have tried adding all sorts off vga=??? entries but when I hit [RETURN] at the Grub screen all goes blank - but the box continues to boot and I end up having to give the three-finger salute :(

Ideas?

This usually indicates that the resolution/color/refresh parameters you set for your framebuffer are outside the range of your multisync (hopefully!) monitor. Try setting them to something less aggressive until it works, then move up from there.
