I have to apologize early for this vague problem description, hopefully somebody can offer me some ideas.
I have a dual boot system, xp and gentoo, gentoo as primary (about 99 % of the time) so this is the main reason why I cannot pinpoint when this problem started : Ocassionally, after a reboot, eth0 does not start up for me during my normal startup procedure.
I have found two solutions to get networking back up: the easy way is just to do Code: | /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start | and this works fine, and the harder way is just to reboot again.... sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.
Maybe this will answer my following question, but lately when I do boot into xp, networking again sometimes does not work (and the only fix I know of in xp is to reboot).
Would this suggest that there is a problem w/ my network card? Short of yanking it out and taking it back, is there anyway to know for sure? Is there something else that could be causing this problem?
Note: My network card is a Realtek RTL-8139, and I did compile the proper driver into my kernel. _________________ hardcore |

Have you tried checking the status indicator on you nic when e0 wont work on gentoo boot or in xp? A system i have here regularlly has a similar problem of which remounting the card is the only soloution..
(It could be worse is what i am stabbing at here)

No, it's not your card. And this is a fairly common problem I know has been discussed before.
I dual Win98SE and Gentoo and Mandrake. When rebooting from Windows, "bringing up eth0" always times out and fails. I've found that ifconfig ->release all and waiting about a minute, and then rebooting works.
Seem windows just won't let go properly. Mandrake used to not hang (version 8. something), but now 9.1 does the same thing. Booting linux to linux is no problem, and booting into Windows hasn't been a problem. If it is, I ifconfig and renew all.
How that helps a bit.
Q: How can I change the timeout setting for the "bringing up eth0" with dhcp? I'd like it to look for about 4 seconds and then continue.
Take care,
