I am going to buy internal PCI modem for internet connection and faxing
It should work and be easy to install and make no problems on Gentoo Arch Ubuntu distros. (ie something really well supported)
If it also works in windows 2000 itll be nice.
What company and model do you recommend ?
Is there anyway to visually identify winmodem or truemodem ? |

11010010110,
That will be a winModem then. Some are supported under linux but it depends on the chip set, not the brand.
Get a proper external serial modem to connect to the serial port of the PC.
It will JustWork with anything then. _________________ Regards,

11010010110,
I have seen one PCI real modem about 10 years ago and it was old then.
Anyone trying to sell one today would soon go out of business as they are more expensive than software modems and Windows users would not buy them.
Many (but not all) ISA bus modems are real modems. Setting up ISA bus devices in Linux is a fading skill set and offers a whole new learning opportunity if you have not done it before.
If your system does not have ISA slots, then a second hand ISA modem is not an option for you.
Read linmodems.org for some pointers on making WinModems work _________________ Regards,

this IS the problem - I dont have ISA slot.
ok is there any other solution ? board has AMR and PCI slots and COM1 serial port. I'd prefer something internal as my cat does not leave any extrenal devices and / or their cables intact for too long. |
