I've just bought a HP Proliant DL140 G3, and I'm having problems with seeing the hard disks correctly.

It's got the following embedded SATA controller:

Code:
00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 631xESB/632xESB SATA Storage Controller RAID (rev 09)

from the lspci output. When I do an fdisk -l, I'm getting:

Code:
livecd ~ # fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/sda doesn't contain a valid partition table

Disk /dev/sdb: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table

Since I've configured the raid controller for Raid 1, the only disk that should be seen is /dev/sda. However, it doesn't seem to be recognising it. I know that with RHEL4, I have to install modules downloadable from here:

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/25810.html

for the embedded SATA raid controller, as RH has the same symptoms until you boot with "linux dd" and provide the modules. Of course, this is for an old kernel, and not sure how I'll be able to use the hardware SATA raid support within Gentoo.

Can anyone help, or seen this problem?!?

Sounds like the normal non-hardware RAID controller problem. I hit this with a Dell server and just used software Linux RAID instead.

Yep, agree with you there.

I find that with RHEL5 that it will install correctly without the need for adding a new module, therefore I think a newer kernel will do the trick. What I'm attempting now is building everything on /dev/sda. I'm then hoping when I install a later gentoo-sources later, that I'll get the system running how I want it to. Although, I'll update on how I go, so am hoping it'll work this way anyhow.

Ok. That seems to suggest a later RH kernel has the modules. These may well be a RH specific patch though. Maybe you'll need to run a RH kernel under Gentoo. Some people run Ubuntu kernel in Gentoo, so it's not as far-fetched as it may sound... hopefully :)

I might give that a go also, and see how I get on with that. It's all fun and games :)

Well, I thought I would update my post.

I updated to the latest kernel, and it seems it must be a patch to the Red Hat kernel that usually gets it working. Anyway, I figured that I would disable the raid controller features in the BIOS, and use it in standard mode.

I then converted my partitions from standard format to raid, so that I could then set up the second hard disk and use the software raid functionality. This all then worked a treat after doing all this, and now I'm using mdadm and software raid mirroring.

So, not quite solved how I wanted it, but working good nonetheless.
