What I'm about to post and the fact that the drive is making strange noises kinda tells me the answer but nevertheless second opinions never hurt...

It's possible that it's a bad cable. I know that I've had a few bad IDE (I'm aware that you're talking about SATA though) cables over the years that did funky things to the drive(s), but still, I'd have to agree with you that the drive it toast. I hope you have SOME kind of warrenty with it! _________________ I'm not a prophet or a stone-age man

None....But you'd be glad to know a new one is on the way....
