|

In terminal mode, "aplay" works fine, both as root and as non-privileged user but member of the audio group. I guess my kernel, modules and alsa-driver work fine, because I can "aplay" any audio file.
Unfortunately, gnome sends me a messagebox after logging in, saying that gnome cannot open /dev/sound/mixer.
At the same time, when I open an xterm in gnome, and I "aplay" a sound file, it works fine.
Does anybody know what is wrong? |

i did get the same error message. the solution was, that the permissions were not set correctly.take a look at the permissions for /dev/sound/mixer and /dev/sound/dsp.
good luck! |

If the permissions were not correctly set, I would be able to use "aplay" as an unprivileged user from an xterm inside Gnome to play sound, would I?
The permissions are set to "root.audio", where my unprivileged user is member of "audio".
What else should I do? |

The permissions are now:
$ ls /dev/sound -l
drw-rw---- 1 root audio dsp
drw-rw---- 1 root audio mixer
And Gnome complains about it. Does Gnome need more privileges? |
