I currently in the installation process. I am (as I type this) in the 'emerge system' phase of the install.

The problem is that the mirror that I'm downloading stuff from doesn't seem to be responding. It is waiting for three minutes between each retry, and retrying each file 5 times before moving on to a different server (distro.ibiblio.org, i believe). Is there any way that I can halt the emerge system process, specify a good mirror, and then resume it?

Because at this rate, it's going to take another 10 hours to finish.

Thanks in advance.

try and edit make.conf and add a better mirror in the MIRRORS="*" section...you can find them on the gentoo.org site

I'm afraid that doesn't work. I specified a new mirror in the make.conf (after figuring out that ctrl+c will get me out of the emerge process just fine, and I can even resume it) and it's still trying to download from oregonstate.edu

Is there an option i can do along with emerge to use a specific mirror? I didn't see anything like that in the emerge help, but I know you can do it with rsync.

Server must be down again (or my boss blocked access... guess I got to
hack the NID again).

Friend told me about
Code:
# mirrorselect -i
or
# mirrorselect -a

Unfortunately, I haven't emerged it, and atm I cant :|

Here's a link to the mirrors list... had a pain in butt finding it.
Google rulez!

Yes, this is bad. Since I can't emerge mirrorselect, since my mirror is down... I guess I'm out of luck.

But where can I configure the default server for emerge? It doesn't seem like make.conf has any effect on it, since no matter what I put in my MIRRORS="ftp://blah", it still tries gentoo.oregonstate.edu first, and takes 15 minutes before going to another server.

Surely there is some config option in some file somewhere that will let me pick a different server for emerge.

try putting in a HTTP address instead of an FTP one...not sure if it will help

Well, it took ~45 minutes to download the three files needed for mirrorselect. i ran 'mirrorselect -a', to let mirrorselect automatically choose mirrors. now things are working fine, I think.

Make sure you UNCOMMENT THE LINE after adding another server to it.
