I am doing a new Gentoo install, and ran across a Grub error I've never seen before.

My system is pretty basic:

/dev/hde1 --> /boot
/dev/hde2 --> swap
/dev/hde3 --> /

My grub.conf file:

Code:
title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.20-r8
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.20-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hde3

and I get this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 1

By the way, I've been using and installing Gentoo for a few years now, but this one has me stumped.

My wacky idea: this is the same computer that gave me a GRUB error after I upgraded the kernel. I'm installing Gentoo in the same computer on a new hard drive, but maybe this is a motherboard problem? This computer is 7 years old.

I think it's this thats wrong
Code:
root (hd0,0)

If you have /boot on /dev/hde it should look like this
Code:
root (hd4,0)

Running Gentoo-2.6.21-r4 (again as 2.6.22 kernels hogs CPU), all but SD reader works fine.

No, grub does see this drive as (hd0). The grub autocomplete function confirms this.

The reason that it is /dev/hde is because my motherboard has a built in Highpoint RAID controller, and drives plugged into it are identified as /dev/hde, /dev/hdf, /dev/hdg, etc.

I have two cd drives that are in the regular PATA controller, and they are /dev/hda and /dev/hdb.

Then you need this workaround if you want GRUB to work.

Thanks -- that did the trick.
