I've set up the graphics drivers fine, and direct rendering is definitely enabled and working. I've also emerged simple 3D games such as Briquolo, and that works fine. However, I've emerged Doom3, Glest and America's Army, and none of them load - all just flick a quick blank screen up, and then exit. If anyone could point me in the right direction it'd be much appreciated :)

Sorry, but nobody will be able to help you unless you volunteer more information. You didn't even mention the brand name of your card, let alone the exact model, your
Code:
emerge --info
output, the version of xorg-x11 you're using, and the version of your video driver. Please provide that information - guessing games are pretty tiresome.

Apologies, I did post that in a bit of a rush and wasn't really thinking as to what I should include.

Right first off, the card is an ATI X1600, and I'm running the latest unstable version of the drivers, 8.35.5. The X-Org server is at version 7.2.

Glest probably gives the answer:

Code:

Exception: Your system supports OpenGL version "1.2 (2.0.6400 (8.35.5))"
Glest needs at least version 1.3 to work
You may solve this problem by installing your latest video card drivers

But I'm running the latest unstable versions, and the latest stable ones don't give me any 3D acceleration at all! Is there no way out until the version I'm running at the moment becomes stable then?

Thanks again, sorry for not providing more info initially

Could you try running doom3 and american-army from terminal as well to see if they also need opengl1.3 or if they have different problems.

And your xorg.conf?
Did you load the dri module (in the xorg.conf)?

Thanks, I'll give tremulous a try.

xorg.conf is very messy, it took a lot of random guesses to get any sort of display at all. And yup, the DRI module is definitely loaded because that was the problem I had initially, it wasn't loading until I upgraded to the latest unstable graphics drivers. But 3D rendering is definitely working, Beryl works fine and glxgears reports a frame rate of about 4000 fps, but the games just crash out.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it :) If I can't get any of the games to work then it's no big deal since I don't really play a lot, I tend to use my PC for mainly work activities, but it would be nice if possible :)

i was reading somewhere that the current version of xorg-server doesn't work with fglrx... not sure if that's true or not. i've noticed that direct rendering isn't working on my laptop, it used to. :?

Here:
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-7.2 0 kB
+
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.35.5 USE="acpi qt3" 0 kB (X1950Pro)
are working excellent with quake4, nexuiz etc...

Btw, you don't need do load the glx module, but that shouldn't cause your problem...

Hmm, I'm running the same versions with the same use flags and still have the problem. It is an X1600 though, perhaps that's making a difference? Looks like it might be a case of waiting for a different xorg server.

No.. I think that it must also work with a X1600
perhaps you could log-in in the console (with xdm, ... killed) and execute "startx -- -logverbose 7". Then show the output of the x logfile (it should be somewhere in /var/log...)!

Hm... _I_ don't see an error... but perhaps someone other else :)
Two other things: Did you run "eselect opengl set ati"?
And, for doom3: You forgot to copy pak001.pk4 to pak004.pk4 to your base(d3) directory (if you don't have it installed on windows, just reemerge doom3-data with the "cdinstall" useflag set)... If you want to try another game (where you don't need to copy anything), try nexuiz (or as already said, tremolo(u)s)..
And could you post the output of
"glxinfo | grep -i direct", please?

Ah, now this might be why... I'm sure it was working earlier though :S

Code:

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":1.0".
direct rendering: No

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated :)

I had a similar problem, but after I upgraded to 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 with ati-drivers-8.35.5 (from 2.6.19 with 8.32.5) DRI was on again.

Hmm, seems like it's just a case of waiting for new releases and keeping up to date then. I'm sure DRI rendering was working earlier though :?

right after this:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
it switches to software rendering:
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

i think it's a driver bug or sth. see my other post
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-548103-highlight-.html
i'm hoping for a solution, too (i can run twm, but not fluxbox)

DawgG, sorry for the naive question, but why can't you use fluxbox? Isn't AIGLX related only to 3D - so disabling it would be enough for fluxbox' needs ?
AIGLX doesn't work for me either (never buy ATI again !) but I don't care as long as I stick to fluxbox.

please forgive my stupidity - i hide behind the server-rack i'm so ashamed....

your post set put me on the right track - my .xinitrc said startfluxbox& - that's why it did not work AND i rebooted the box (for another reason). the AIGLX=off (in the right syntax) setting does not influence fluxbox at all.

i hope the "reverting to sw-rendering" only applies to aiglx - glxinfo tells me "direct rendering - YES". i'll see what doom "says"

and you are right: i never buy ati (i prefer nvidia). this is a thinkpad i got from work, and i thought ati can't be THAT bad, i'll give it a try (and the core duo is not so bad). my former notebook had onboard-vga, but beryl ran flawlessly (but no games)

thx for setting me on the right track!! :D

Sry for OffTopic, but ATi isn't that bad. I've 2 ATi Cards and both work as good as my nVidia Cards. No Problems at all...

DawgG,
how did you manage to run beryl on ATI? What card is it? Once I tried that and failed - I can't have composite and 3D acceleration at a time with fglrx - which makes me unable to run beryl...
So, how did you do it ?
