OK, well I've had some bad luck with linux recenly (internet problems with both fedora and ubuntu), and want to try a 64-bit OS with 64-bit userland. On PPC, the only possibility for this with linux is gentoo. Thing is I'm a little scared of Gentoo, it seems to be for people who know a lot more about linux than I do. Should I be? I know the basics of the command line, installing from source etc :?.....! :?

if you dont try you will not learn anything. there is nothing to be scared.
everybody has to start somewhere.
read the installation manual well 3 or 4 times before installing.
it is quite friendly if you care for it

take initial steps everybody helps when you are stuck somewhere.
:D :D

If you know how to edit config files and compile from source, you have most of the skills you need :)

Gentoo has some of the best documentation of any of the Linux distros, so start with things like the Handbook for your main guide.

If you run into any other problems, well, that is what this forum is for :)
