I would love to be able to burn the lurvely new Gentoo LiveDVD release, just to see how it's progressed, but my DVD writer is having a hard time. I remember the last kernel I ran seemed fine. I was able to burn DAO music CDs perfectly, write a CD/DVD from a .img, etc. Now, however, I made a new kernel (2.6.20-gentoo-r7) and I believe I may have left something vital to disk burning out. I've checked but I couldn't find anything. Here's some information...

First we try burning the CD.

Code:
# cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd livedvd-i686-installer-2007.0/livedvd-i686-installer-2007.0.iso
cdrecord: No write mode specified.
cdrecord: Asuming -tao mode.
cdrecord: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.
Cdrecord-ProDVD-Clone 2.01.01a10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2006 Jörg Schilling
scsidev: '/dev/hdd'
devname: '/dev/hdd'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Warning: Open by 'devname' is unintentional and not supported.
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.27
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.
Device type    : Removable CD-ROM
Version        : 0
Response Format: 2
Capabilities   :
Vendor_info    : 'SONY    '
Identifikation : 'DVD RW DRU-720A '
Revision       : 'JY01'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.
resid: 80
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc-3 DVD+RW driver (mmc_dvdplusrw).
Driver flags   : DVD MMC-3 SWABAUDIO BURNFREE FORCESPEED
Supported modes: PACKET SAO
cdrecord: Drive does not support TAO recording.
cdrecord: Illegal write mode for this drive.

Now, we check the device.

Code:
# cdrecord dev=/dev/dvd -checkdrive

Only one supported mode. This is strange. Finally, we check the media for more information.

I am not sure but I think the kernel might be to blame. Is there something I could be missing? If you need more info to help, I am glad to get it. Thanks in advance!!

Could you try "cdrecord dev=/dev/dvd -checkdrive" as root?

strange, my drive 'only' supports sao and packet too - but I did not have any problems in the past...

Hm, can't test at the moment... no iso to burn...
