64bit gentoo vlc won't start

I emerged vlc but somehow it won't start
I do not have startmenu items or anything.

I type vlc and that's that:

$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
Remote control interface initialized. Type `help' for help.

nothing happens?

do I have to start it with some other options? I am a bit lost...
