Posted: Thu May 24, 2007 3:02 pm Post subject: [SOLVED] bad 3D performance with ATI Radeon XPress 200M |
|
|
I have an HP Pavilion dv8000 with an AMD Turion 64, 2GB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon XPress 200M allocated 256MB of memory.
I've heard some folks claim to be getting 1500 FPS, and more, with glxgears. I'm only getting 250 FPS.
I am usinng the ati-drivers-8.35.5 package.

Hmm, does your card really uses 256 MB? Perhaps line below excludes that ?
Quote: |
**) fglrx(0): ATI GART size: 128 MB
(II) fglrx(0): [pcie] 126976 kB allocated with handle 0xdeadbeef
|
next, I have no idea what these options are for:
Code: |
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
|
but I don't have them in my config and I get ~900 FPS on my XPress 200M. My section looks as follows:
Code: |
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter 0"
Driver "fglrx"
#BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
Option "no_accel" "no"
Option "no_dri" "no"
EndSection
|
next, I remember that when setting up my ATI I followed: this and it helped me to get correct kernel config, DRI, etc.
Please let me know whether it helped and what was the hint, cause I don't know most of the config options meanings- I just use them and it would be nice to learn something new. |

I tried changing my Device section to:
Code: |
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Driver "fglrx"
#VideoRam 262144
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
Option "no_accel" "no"
Option "no_dri" "no"
EndSection
|
but it didn't help anything |

As I wrote before, there is not much help I can provide, since I don't really understand these settings
As I also wrote I don't use these:
Code: |
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
|
so maybe try getting rid of them. (I don't suspect it will change much, though).
And check out website which I mentioned; perhaps it is the matter of your kernel config.
This site covers lots of topics, faqs, etc. |

Well, this is interesting. My FPS on glxgears is now down to 125 FPS. Just for shits though, I decided to start up Second Life. The performance is now the BEST that I have ever seen on this hardware. It is 10X better than what I got when this was a Windows XP box!!!! I cannot believe it. I am elated!!!!
The portage tree only had ati-drivers-8.35.5. So, I ran the install script for the 8.36.5 ati-driver, and followed the performance optimizations that I found here: http://deepcopy.org/resources/radeon9500.html |
